Born in Pembroke, Wales, David Bellamy is a world famous watercolour artist and author. He travels widely in search of subjects to paint and is especially fascinated by mountains, the Arctic in its various moods, and desert scenery in the Middle East.
In his search for subjects to paint he has fallen over a crocodile in Kenya, sketched on dog-sledges in Greenland, drawn moonlight scenes on a glacier in his underwear and taught Maasai warriors to sketch in Tanzania.
“I am drawn mainly to the wilder, raw landscapes of mountain, Arctic, rocky coastlines and desert, as being close to nature gives me a sense of freedom, something that has been with me since a young child. Sketching and painting directly from nature enables me to connect more deeply with the natural environment, whether rock, ice, trees, lakes, streams, rivers, glaciers or simply rough undergrowth. Wild natural chaos is more pleasurable to my eye than tidily manicured landscapes. Amidst these vast places, with their varied moods and elemental forces I feel more alive, with a greater sense of well-being, and I enjoy highlighting these amazing places through my paintings and books. I sometimes include wildlife in my landscapes.”
IWM2026 is David’s first appearance at International Watercolour Masters and we are delighted to include him in the show.
David will give a live demonstration at 3.30pm on 18th May 2026
