“My portrait paintings are my real love – it’s hard to explain the excitement of trying to connect with the essence of a person through their expression…their pose…their placement in the composition. When I feel my relationship to my subject matter begin to click in the early stages of a painting, it’s like the beginning of a friendship – it begins to evolve and take on a life of its own.
I work with a very transparent palette of watercolours and paint exclusively on hot press paper. One of the things that drew me to watercolour was the spontaneous look that an artist can achieve if a subject is not overworked. Drawing is very important to me and is a passion that ties in nicely with what I call my “quick sketch” watercolours, drawn freehand and painted in a short amount of time. “
